Summary
Shekhar a Hindu man
who is studding on becoming a journalist one day looks upon Shaila a muslim
girl from the village and can’t seem to look away. He falls in love with her at first
sight and decides to pursue her. However Shaila tries to avoid Shekhar, because
of their different religions. Shekhar keeps pursing Shalila and she soon gives
in and they get engaged. Most of the people in town don’t support the marriage
especially the two families because of the hatred between the Muslims and Hindu religion. So the
newlywed couple decides to move to the city where Shekhar gets a job as a
journalist and where they have two children. Things were going really well for
the family till riots between the Hindus and Muslims start to erupt. Shekhar
interviews many officials to inform the public and try to stop this. However it
just keeps getting worse. Their two boys get lost and put in danger twice. After the first riots the families of the
couple come down in support and tries helping each other out not caring about
their different religions. After the second wave of riots Shaila’s dad and mom
get burned alive. The family is really being torn apart. After everyone realized all the people being
terrorized, killed, and all the damage done, they settle down and stop the
violence.
Major theme
This
movie’s major themes are religion, violence, family, and love. Shekhar and Shaila where born into different religions however that did not stop them from falling in love. No one supported them, however they didn't let that discourage them. The hatred between there religions kept getting worse and violence broke out through the city. This violence didn't solve anything and both religions had to learn the tough way.
Reaction
This film really showed the struggles and tension between these two religions in India. The first part of the movie didn't seem realistic at all. I felt like Shekhar seemed like a creep following Shaila around and it was very funny to me, however the movie did get very serious. The costumes and scenery was very good. The singing scenes flowed through the movie very well.
