Central Station

Summary

Dora after retirement has picked up a new gig to keep herself financially stable. Because of the low literacy rate in Brazil she decides to set up a booth in the Central Station to charge people so they can have her write and mail out letters for them. She gets good business, however she usually never mails the letters out and just leaves them in a drawer at her house. One day Josue and his mother, Ana, stop by Dora's booth and Ana decides to mail out a letter to her husband that she has broken up with that she wants him back and wants him to meet Ana and her husband split apart because he had a drinking problem and was physically abusive to her. Dora decides not to mail the letter out, because she feels like he would just come back and the same problems would arise. Unexpectedly while Josue was leaving with his mom he drops his toy and she looking back doesn't notice a bus coming and it kills her. Dora decides to take in Josue because a random man tells her if she bring him to her she will get a good amount of money. She does this and talks to her friend about it. Her friend looks at her in disgust because the random boy would most likely get killed and his organs would be sold on the black market. Dora then realizes what she has done and decides to steal him back, by achieving this her life was in danger so she decides to help Josue's find the only person he has left his father. However after a couple of days on the road they never find his father, but they stumble upon his two brothers. The two brothers take them in thinking Dora was just there fathers friend, but they didn't know Josue was there brother. The father has been lost and all he left behind was a letter where he wrote about how he misses Ana and plans her to bring her back and reunite the family. Dora decides it's her time to go, leaving Josue to live with his two brothers.

Major theme

Major themes are trust, death, alcohol abuse, love, what's right from wrong , and family. Trust is really important in the movie. People would trust that Dora would send the letters, but she wouldn't. Also Jose trusted Dora with his life, she almost gave him up to get killed. This movie also shows the impact of ones family on their life. Without any close family members life is so much more difficult and challenging. Poverty is also shown especially because the literacy rate is so poor and how Dora being a retired teacher was struggling to get buy and couldn't even afford a TV.

Reaction

I really enjoyed the film. I really stated to develop a haters for Dora, however after a certain I felt sorry for her as well.
